Both are love letters to both the sports genre and the coming-of-age subgenre, where your favorite lowest common denominator (JP in Redline, JD in Megalo Box) fights against the odds and many opponents in order to become someone and accomplish his dreams. They also share the fact that you need to watch both at one point or another.Ī virtually identical premise (a contestant that wants to leave the world of rigged-up matches in order to pursue his search for glory) is the first thing that links these two impressive works, alongside an extremely likable character, a futuristic setting and their shared dream to win the biggest, most important tournament they'll ever join. As well as the two sharing a very similar way of being told in how they both increasingly get more over the top with every minute you watch with both leading up to a mind-boggling finale that will only leave you thinking 'What a journey'. However both of them also have very crazy and unique art-styles practically throwing colors everywhere. Redline stands as a single movie with no extensions where as Gurren Lagann is a 27 episode series with multiple ovas, specials, etc. They are also animated by different studios Gurren Lagann being done by Trigger and Redline being done by Mad House. Gurren Lagann and Redline are similar shows in only a few aspects as the two are in different genres, Gurren Lagann being a mecha and Redline being a racing anime.
